Iceland sits directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the boundary where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart at roughly the width of a human fingernail per year. The island is essentially being made in real time, which explains the volcanic activity, the geothermal heat venting through every crack in the lava fields, and the general sense that the ground beneath you has opinions. This isn't metaphor. It's geology, and it's worth understanding before you arrive because it makes everything you see make more sense.
The challenge with Iceland is that its popularity over the past fifteen years has concentrated an enormous number of visitors into a fairly narrow corridor. The Golden Circle, the Blue Lagoon, the south coast waterfalls: these are real and worth seeing, but they now operate at a scale that works against the qualities that made Iceland compelling in the first place. The interior highlands, accessible only in summer when the mountain roads open, receive a fraction of that traffic and deliver something considerably closer to the Iceland that existed before it became a bucket list fixture.
The Westfjords in the northwest are the oldest part of the island geologically and the least visited region by a significant margin, a dramatic peninsula of fjords and bird cliffs and small fishing communities that feels genuinely remote in a way the south coast no longer does. The Eastfjords are similarly quiet.
