There is a concept in Japanese aesthetics called monozukuri, roughly translated as the art of making things, that describes an approach to craft and attention that permeates the culture at every level. It's in the way a bowl of ramen is composed at a counter in a Sapporo basement. It's in the way a ryokan attendant folds a yukata. It's in the way a Japanese garden manages to feel both meticulously controlled and completely natural simultaneously. Once you start seeing it, you see it everywhere, and it changes how you evaluate everything you encounter afterward.

Japan is also a country of extraordinary geographic and cultural range that most itineraries compress into Tokyo, Kyoto, and a bullet train between them. The Japan Alps offer serious mountain terrain and onsen culture in a combination that has no real equivalent anywhere else. The Tohoku region in the north carries a quieter, more traditional character that the heavily touristed Kansai corridor has largely moved past. Hokkaido in winter is a powder skiing destination that Japan's domestic market has known about for decades and the international market is only beginning to catch up with. The Seto Inland Sea, navigated by ferry between art islands that have been quietly building one of the most interesting contemporary art ecosystems in Asia, is a week-long itinerary that most visitors to Japan don't know exists.
