MALDIVES
THE MALDIVES IS 99% OCEAN. PLAN ACCORDINGLY.
The Maldives sits on one of the most extraordinary marine ecosystems on the planet, and most people who go there spend the majority of their time above it. The overwater villa is a genuine achievement of hospitality design and we're not here to argue against it, but treating it as the point of the trip is a bit like going to Yellowstone and staying in the hotel lobby.
Below the surface, the Maldives delivers at a scale that serious divers rank alongside the Coral Triangle and the Galápagos. Manta ray aggregations in the right atoll at the right time of year number in the hundreds. Whale shark encounters in the North Malé Atoll are among the most reliable in the world. The thilas, submerged pinnacles that rise from the deep water channels between atolls, host reef systems of a density and color that experienced divers consistently describe as among the best they've encountered anywhere.
The archipelago also rewards the traveler who thinks about it geographically rather than just as a resort destination. There are 26 atolls spread across 500 miles of Indian Ocean, and the experience of moving between them by liveaboard or private charter is a fundamentally different proposition from flying into a resort island and staying put. The local islands, where Maldivian communities actually live outside the resort economy, carry a cultural texture that the purpose-built tourist islands have deliberately designed out. We build Maldives itineraries around the water, the wildlife, and the full geography of the place, with the villa as one element rather than the entire premise.
