SLOVENIA
EUROPE'S MOST UNDERRATED COUNTRY ISN'T A SECRET ANYMORE, BUT IT'S NOT CROWDED YET
Slovenia sits at a geographical crossroads that shouldn't work as well as it does. The eastern edge of the Alps, the northern reach of the Mediterranean, the western fringe of the Balkans: all of it converges in a country you can drive across in two hours, yet somehow each region feels distinct enough to justify its own trip.
Lake Bled is the obvious starting point and it earns its reputation, though the crowds at the viewpoint on a summer morning will test your patience. The less-visited answer is the Soča Valley to the west, where the river runs a color that seems chemically impossible, a glacial turquoise that photographers consistently fail to capture accurately, moving through a valley that saw some of the most brutal fighting of the First World War and now hosts kayakers and fly fishermen in a landscape of almost aggressive beauty.
The Julian Alps above Kranjska Gora offer serious hiking and climbing without the infrastructure burden of the Swiss or Austrian Alps. The Karst plateau in the southwest conceals one of the great cave systems of Europe at Postojna and Škocjan, the latter a UNESCO site of geological drama that most visitors to Slovenia somehow miss entirely. And the wine regions of Brda and the Vipava Valley, sitting on the Italian border, produce bottles that sommeliers have been quietly excited about for years while the prices remain where they were before anyone was paying attention. Slovenia rewards the traveler who has already done the obvious European trips and is ready for something that requires a bit more curiosity to find.
