SLOVENIA

Europe's most underrated country isn't a secret anymore, but it's not crowded yet.

Slovenia sits at a geographical crossroads that shouldn't work as well as it does. The eastern edge of the Alps, the northern reach of the Mediterranean, the western fringe of the Balkans: all of it converges in a country you can drive across in two hours, yet somehow each region feels distinct enough to justify its own trip.

Lake Bled is the obvious starting point and it earns its reputation, though the crowds at the viewpoint on a summer morning will test your patience. The less-visited answer is the Soča Valley to the west, where the river runs a color that seems chemically impossible, a glacial turquoise that photographers consistently fail to capture accurately, moving through a valley that saw some of the most brutal fighting of the First World War and now hosts kayakers and fly fishermen in a landscape of almost aggressive beauty.

The Julian Alps above Kranjska Gora offer serious hiking and climbing without the infrastructure burden of the Swiss or Austrian Alps. The Karst plateau in the southwest conceals one of the great cave systems of Europe at Postojna and Škocjan, the latter a UNESCO site of geological drama that most visitors to Slovenia somehow miss entirely. And the wine regions of Brda and the Vipava Valley, sitting on the Italian border, produce bottles that sommeliers have been quietly excited about for years while the prices remain where they were before anyone was paying attention. Slovenia rewards the traveler who has already done the obvious European trips and is ready for something that requires a bit more curiosity to find.

Ways to explore

Think of these as a glimpse of what’s possible. Together, we’ll design a journey that reflects your style and spirit.

ALPINE ADVENTURES

Summit the Julian Alps, kayak across Lake Bohinj, or explore Triglav National Park with expert local guides. Slovenia’s alpine landscapes invite soft adventure — accessible yet stirring, where mornings begin with mist and end beside mountain fires.

GASTRONOMY & WINE ROUTES

From Vipava Valley to Goriška Brda, taste wines rivaling Tuscany’s best and dine in farmstead restaurants where everything comes from the land around you. Slovenia’s culinary scene blends rustic mountain fare with Michelin-star refinement.

WELLNESS IN THE WILD

Sink into natural thermal pools, forest-bathe in the Soča Valley, or retreat to an alpine spa where pine-scented air meets modern serenity. Wellness here is not indulgence — it’s elemental renewal.

CULTURE & CASTLES

Wander medieval Ljubljana, explore Venetian-influenced coastal towns, and uncover stories hidden within clifftop castles. Slovenia’s cultural tapestry is intricate yet intimate — a bridge between the Slavic, Mediterranean, and Alpine worlds.

Where you'll stay

We don't book beds. We select base camps. Every property here was chosen because it earns its place in the landscape and adds something to the journey that a different property simply couldn't. Some are remote. Some are remarkable. Most are both.

VANDER URBANI

The first Slovenian member of Design Hotels, built across four medieval Baroque townhouses in the pedestrian heart of the old town, steps from the Ljubljanica River. Behind the traditional Slovenian façades lies a high-design world of glass, chrome, and concrete, with a rooftop infinity pool overlooking the castle and tiled rooftops, and a restaurant led by a French chef whose cooking draws on Slovenian agricultural traditions. Sixteen rooms, each individually designed.

ADVENTURE,
ELEVATED.

Slovenia is what Europe feels like before the crowds arrive. That window is open. We'll help you make the most of it.
