THAILAND
THAILAND IS ONE OF THE MOST VISITED COUNTRIES ON EARTH. GO ANYWAY.
Forty million international visitors per year sounds like a reason to cross Thailand off the list. It isn't, because the crowds are not evenly distributed. They concentrate in Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui, and Chiang Mai's old city, which means that a significant portion of the country operates at a completely different register if you know where to direct your attention.
The river systems of the north, the hill tribe villages along the Myanmar border, the limestone karst interior of Krabi province away from the beach infrastructure, the ancient capital at Sukhothai which receives a fraction of Ayutthaya's traffic despite being the more historically significant site: these are the places that remind you what Thailand was before it became the world's most efficient tourism machine. The country is genuinely extraordinary at its core, and that core is more accessible than the visitor numbers suggest.
Thailand also rewards the traveler who takes its spiritual and cultural life seriously rather than treating it as backdrop. The forest monastery tradition in the north produces some of the most rigorous Buddhist practice in Southeast Asia. The cooking culture, approached properly rather than through a resort demonstration class, is a genuine window into how the country thinks about land, season, and community. We design Thailand itineraries that use the famous places as orientation points and build the substance of the trip around the quieter, less-trafficked version of the country that most visitors never find because they didn't know to look for it.
