DAYS 4-6

FLÅM & THE MOUNTAIN RAILWAY

Days here settle into a slower rhythm, fjord walks and quiet time in a village built almost entirely around this rail line's history.

DAYS 7-8

BERGEN & THE FJORD COAST

The trip closes in Bergen, Bryggen's wooden waterfront and real coastal food replacing the mountain terrain of the days before. This stretch runs at the trip's most contemplative pace, a fitting close after several days of near-constant motion and scenery.

HOTEL UNION ØYE

A grand wooden manor at the end of Norangsfjorden, open since 1891 and still carrying the same eclectic, antique-furnished character that once drew European royalty, Kaiser Wilhelm II among them, along with writers like Arthur Conan Doyle and Karen Blixen. Each of the thirty-eight rooms is named for a notable past guest, and the surrounding Sunnmøre Alps and fjord give the whole property a fairy-tale quality that's rare even by Norwegian standards. It's genuinely remote, reachable mostly by boat or a long drive, and that isolation is very much the point.

FRETHEIM HOTEL

A Swiss chalet-style hotel built in 1870 at the terminus of the Flåm Railway, right across from the harbor where fjord cruises depart into the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord. The oldest sections retain original details, open fires, antique furniture, restored carefully rather than replaced, while a newer wing added in 2000 connects via glass facade. The kitchen leans into locally sourced Norwegian ingredients, and the hotel's location makes it the obvious base for anyone routing through Flåm by rail or fjord cruise.

A Bergen landmark dating to 1885, fully reimagined in 2018 into a sleek, contemporary lifestyle hotel without losing its central position at the edge of Torgallmenningen, the city's main square.
