PORTO & THE DOURO VALLEY

The trip opens in Porto's old quarters before moving into the Douro itself, terraced vineyards and family-owned estates setting the tone early. Days alternate between city time and private wine country tastings, an unhurried introduction to Portugal that never feels rushed toward the Spanish half of the trip still ahead.

DAYS 5-7

CÓRDOBA

The route crosses into Andalusia, Córdoba's layered Roman, Moorish, and Christian history providing real depth before Seville's bigger energy takes over. Days settle into guided architecture, quiet courtyards, and considerably slower pacing than the trip's opening act.

DAYS 8-11

SEVILLE

The trip closes in Seville, Moorish palaces and sunlit plazas by day, flamenco and rooftop dinners by night. This is the trip's most vivid stretch, and it's built to close on a genuinely high note after two countries and considerably more ground covered than the pace ever let on.

Where you could stay

HOTEL ALFONSO XIII

A palatial hotel built by the Spanish king himself for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, and one of the most storied addresses in the country as a result. A hundred and fifty-one rooms run Moorish, Andalusian, or Castilian in style, hand-painted tiles and marble throughout, and the guest list over the decades runs from European royalty to Hemingway and Audrey Hepburn. It sits directly beside the Real Alcázar and just steps from the cathedral, putting Seville's two biggest landmarks essentially at the hotel's front door.

HOSPES PALACIO DEL BAILÍO

A sixteenth-century palace in the heart of Córdoba's old town, built directly over the remains of a first-century Roman villa still visible through a glass floor in the main dining room. Just fifty-one rooms arranged around five separate courtyards, original frescoes and stone arches preserved throughout, contrasted against crisp, contemporary interiors that never let the history feel like a museum piece. The spa runs on restored Roman baths, and the whole property sits a fifteen-minute walk from the city's famous mosque-cathedral.

THE YEATMAN

A hilltop property in Vila Nova de Gaia, built directly among the historic port lodges with views straight across the river to Porto's old town. Every one of its rooms is designed around a different Portuguese wine estate, and the cellar holds one of the largest collections in the country. Two Michelin stars in the restaurant, an actual spa built around wine treatments, and a location close enough to Taylor's port house to walk there in under two minutes.
