COSTA RICA

COSTA RICA HAS DONE SOMETHING ALMOST NO OTHER COUNTRY HAS

In 1948, Costa Rica abolished its military and redirected that budget toward education and conservation. It now protects roughly 25 percent of its land mass in national parks and reserves. For a country the size of West Virginia, that's an extraordinary commitment, and it shows. The biodiversity here is genuinely staggering: more bird species than the entire North American continent, ecosystems ranging from cloud forest to dry tropical to mangrove to coral reef, all within a few hours of each other.

The challenge with Costa Rica is that its reputation has gotten ahead of it in certain places. The Arenal and Manuel Antonio corridors are well-developed and well-visited, and while they're not without merit, they represent a version of the country that's been somewhat optimized for tourism. The Osa Peninsula, the Nicoya, the Caribbean coast around Tortuguero, the highlands around San Gerardo de Dota where resplendent quetzals still appear in the cloud forest if you're there at the right time of year: these are the places that remind you what the country was before it became a brand.

We design Costa Rica itineraries around that version. The lodges that sit inside the ecosystems rather than adjacent to them. The guides who have spent decades in a specific patch of forest and can find things that a generalist simply can't. The routing that takes advantage of the country's compact geography without turning it into a checklist. Pura vida is a cliché now, but the thing it describes is still real if you know where to look.
