NORWAY

NORWAY REWARDS THE TRAVELER WHO ISN'T IN A HURRY

The fjords of western Norway are one of those rare cases where the reality exceeds the photograph, which is saying something given how well they photograph. Sognefjord runs 130 miles inland and reaches depths of over 4,000 feet. The walls rise so steeply from the water that some farms along the shore receive no direct sunlight for months at a time. It's the kind of geography that makes you reconsider your assumptions about what a landscape can actually do.

But Norway is a country of distinct regions, each with its own character and its own season. The Lofoten Islands in winter, when the fishing villages sit under a sky that can produce aurora on a clear night, is a completely different Norway from the midnight sun coast in July. Svalbard, the Arctic archipelago sitting halfway between the Norwegian mainland and the North Pole, is a wildlife and wilderness destination that operates outside the normal European travel imagination entirely. Polar bears outnumber people there, which is a statistic that tends to focus the mind.

We design Norway itineraries that match the right region to the right traveler at the right time of year, because the timing here matters more than almost anywhere. The wrong season in the wrong place is a missed opportunity in a country this dependent on light. Get it right and Norway delivers something that stays with you in the particular way that genuinely cold, genuinely wild places tend to.
