PERU

MACHU PICCHU IS THE BEGINNING, NOT THE POINT

Everyone goes to Machu Picchu. And they should, because it's genuinely one of the most remarkable things humans have ever built, and standing there in the early morning before the crowds arrive is an experience that holds up against any expectation. But if that's where the itinerary peaks, something has gone wrong.

Peru is one of the most archaeologically and ecologically complex countries on earth. The Sacred Valley has Incan sites that receive a fraction of Machu Picchu's foot traffic and carry just as much weight. The Colca Canyon runs twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and is home to condor populations that still use the thermals the way they always have. The Amazon basin begins its descent from the eastern Andes in Peru, and the transition zone between cloud forest and jungle is one of the most biodiverse corridors on the planet.

Then there's the culture, which isn't past tense. Quechua communities in the highlands maintain agricultural and ceremonial traditions that have survived everything thrown at them over five centuries. A well-designed encounter with that living culture will stay with you longer than any photograph of a ruin. We build itineraries that treat Peru as the layered, still-breathing place it actually is, and calibrate the pace to let it register.
