Weather-Smart Clothing
Weather-smart packing comes down to just a few key versatile layers.

We have packed for trips that started in 90°F heat, hiked through snow two days later, and experienced a rainstorm that felt like a car wash in between. If you've ever packed for Patagonia or Iceland, you know: the weather doesn't care what season it says on the calendar.

The Three-Layer Rule

  • Base layer: Moisture-wicking, quick-dry. Merino or synthetic (highly recommend Patagonia's Midweight Capilene line).

  • Mid layer: In warmer climates, this doubles as your outer layer (such as durable pants from KUHL, Sahara Shade Hoody from REI). In cooler climates, go for warmth without bulk -- think lightweight fleece.

  • Shell: Situation-specific -- Sometimes this is as simple as a packable, lightly insulated jacket (like the Patagonia Micro Puff). We always recommend including something windproof and waterproof as well, preferably packable (we like the Torrentshell jacket from Patagonia).

Accessories That Save the Day

  • Buff/neck gaiter -- These are so versatile! And you'll be surprised just how much warmer you will be with the wind off your neck. David swears by the original Buff Merino Lightweight.

  • Packable gloves -- because nobody wants cold or wet hands

  • Compact umbrella (yes, even in the desert = sunshade!)

Don't pack more -- pack smarter. Versatile layers are your best travel insurance. For more, check out our resources on Versatile Adventure Clothing and Packing for Kids & Families.
